Lean body mass · first principles

Enter weight and body fat % to estimate LBM, compare formulas, and see how it feeds protein targets, a Katch-McArdle BMR comparison, and muscle retention.

## What is lean body mass?

Lean body mass (LBM) is your weight minus fat mass. It's the engine that drives your metabolism, strength and function.

If you know your body fat %, the simplest formula is weight × (1 − bf/100). When you don't, formulas like Boer and Hume estimate LBM from height and weight alone.

## Where lean mass sits on the muscle spectrum

Adjusted FFMI normalizes lean mass for height. Numbers are lower bounds for each band.

Average

18M · 14F

Untrained adult population baseline.

Trained

20M · 16F

Consistent resistance training, 1 to 2 years in.

Advanced

22M · 18F

Programmed progression, 3 to 5 years of work.

Elite natural

24M · 20F

Drug-tested physique competitors cluster here.

Exceptional

26M · 22F

Past the natural ceiling described in Kouri 1995.

Bands are research-informed orientation, not normative targets. Genetic ceiling sits 1 to 2 points below the elite-natural threshold for most lifters.

## Four ways to estimate lean mass

Direct uses your body fat. Boer, Hume and James estimate lean mass from height and weight when you don't have a body-fat reading.

Direct

weight × (1 − bf/100)

80 kg × (1 − 0.18) = 65.6 kg

Boer

0.407·kg + 0.267·cm − 19.2

0.407·80 + 0.267·180 − 19.2 = 61.4 kg

Hume

0.328·kg + 0.339·cm − 29.5

0.328·80 + 0.339·180 − 29.5 = 57.8 kg

James

1.10·kg − 128·(kg/cm)²

1.10·80 − 128·(80/180)² = 62.7 kg

The example numbers come from a 1.80 m, 80 kg male at 18% body fat. The 4 kg spread across formulas is the cost of not measuring body fat.

## Why scale weight hides the lean-mass signal

Recomposition means losing fat and gaining muscle over the same period. Weight may fall, stay similar or rise, depending on the balance of those changes. Track waist, body measurements and training performance alongside the weight trend; none is conclusive on its own.

Bodyweight is the sum of two stocks moving in opposite directions. Cutting half a kilo of fat while building half a kilo of muscle reads as zero on the scale, even though body composition has shifted measurably.

Lean body mass includes muscle, water, bone and organs. This calculator estimates it from weight and body fat percentage. Errors in those inputs affect the result, and a change in estimated lean mass does not establish muscle gain.

Lean mass also feeds a calorie equation. Katch-McArdle estimates BMR from lean mass instead of age, sex, height and weight. In people who train regularly and had lean mass measured in a lab, it matched measured resting burn more closely than Mifflin-St Jeor. With a tape or photo estimate, use it as a comparison, not a replacement.

## Lean mass and recomposition, explained

Questions people search when the scale stays flat but the mirror keeps moving.

### Is lean body mass the same as fat-free mass?

Almost. Lean body mass (LBM) includes a small essential fat fraction inside organs and the central nervous system. Fat-free mass (FFM) strips out every gram of fat. The numerical difference is roughly 2 to 4 percent of bodyweight. In day-to-day nutrition planning the two are used interchangeably.

### Why does LBM matter more than weight when cutting?

Lean mass is metabolically active, so a cut that erodes it can lower your real maintenance. Katch-McArdle uses lean mass as its direct input, which is why we show it as a comparison. Tracking weight, waist and training monthly catches the drift early.

### How accurate is body-fat-derived LBM versus Boer or Hume?

Body-fat-derived LBM is only as accurate as the body-fat input. With a Navy tape or 3-site skinfold, expect ±3 to 4 percentage points of body fat, which translates to ±2 to 3 kg of LBM. Boer, Hume and James estimate LBM from height and weight only, so they typically agree within ±2 kg of each other but can be 4 to 6 kg off the body-fat-derived number.

### What's a realistic natural FFMI ceiling?

Adjusted FFMI plateaus around 25 for natural male lifters and 22 for natural female lifters, based on Kouri 1995 and follow-up surveys of drug-tested physique competitors. Above those numbers, sustained progression without pharmaceuticals is rare. Most lifters stop progressing 1 to 2 points below their genetic ceiling.

### How often should I recompute LBM?

Every 4 to 6 weeks during a cut or a lean bulk. LBM noise from glycogen, hydration and gut contents is roughly ±1 kg week to week, so a monthly cadence smooths the signal. During maintenance, every 2 to 3 months is enough.

### Why does Katch-McArdle BMR use LBM?

Lean tissue accounts for most resting energy use, so Katch-McArdle (Cunningham 1991) predicts BMR from lean mass alone, while Mifflin-St Jeor uses age, sex, height and weight. In recreational athletes with lab-measured lean mass, an earlier lean-mass equation by the same author (Cunningham 1980) was within 10 percent of measured resting rate for 78 to 85 percent of people, against under half for Mifflin (ten Haaf 2014). That evidence depends on measured lean mass; a tape or photo estimate adds error of its own.
